Overview

Hindlow Quarry

Hindlow Quarry is a limestone quarry with a history stretching back to the late 19th century. It supplies industrial lime used in the production of essential materials ranging from iron, steel, plastic, glass, pharmaceuticals, animal feed and toothpaste. It is also used as a base for construction materials used to build roads, railways, buildings, and drainage works.

In recent times the onsite lime manufacturing plant has relied on limestone imported from Tunstead Quarry (east of Buxton). However, we have recently restarted extraction at the quarry both to continue to manufacture lime onsite but also to meet the increasing demand for construction materials driven by major infrastructure projects.

We originally received planning permission for the extraction of minerals at Hindlow Quarry in 1957. A review of this permission (ROMP) took place in 1998, with further extensions to this granted by Derbyshire County Council (DCC) as the conditions remained fit for purpose. We are now shortly due to submit our ROMP application as the next deadline for a review is upcoming in summer 2021.
