Hindlow Quarry

Welcome to Hindlow Quarry

Thank you for visiting our website. Its purpose is to share information on the application we have prepared for a Review of the Old Mineral Permission (known as a ROMP). A ROMP is a mandatory review of planning conditions at 15-year intervals required by the Environment Act 1995. Their purpose is to ensure quarries operate with conditions that meet modern environmental standards. The next deadline for a periodic review of the permission is upcoming in summer 2021, which is why we are preparing an application at this time.

Hindlow Quarry is a limestone quarry on the A515 by Sterndale Moor. It is located between Brierlow Quarry (operated by Lhoist) and Dowlow Quarry (operated by Breedon), abutting both.

Our current permission enables us to extract limestone on the site until 2042. The ROMP process will not change that date , but the submission will demonstrate that the anticipated extraction rate would mean quarrying would need to continue beyond this date. The submission will therefore assess and provide an indication of what a working scheme and restoration plan could look like once the quarry has been fully developed. You can view and download these plans by clicking on “proposed working scheme” above.

The submission is accompanied by an Environmental Statement that sets out the technical assessments we have undertaken to consider and determine any mitigation required in terms of the local environment. This will be submitted to Derbyshire County Council to accompany the ROMP submission. We have summarised the key findings from these environmental assessments, which you can read alongside the full Environmental Statement by clicking on “environmental assessments” above.

In addition to this, any other relevant documents, maps and diagrams can be found by clicking on “downloads” above.

In the coming weeks, Derbyshire County Council will publicise the ROMP submission and run a statutory consultation on the documents. You will be able to comment on directly via their planning portal.
